In 1997, W. Aßmus and G. Behr founded the working group “AK Intermetallica,” initially focusing on “Intermetallic and Oxidic Materials with Spin and Charge Correlations.” As the group’s research evolved, we adopted a name that better reflected our current work. After a vote, we chose “Correlated Quantum Materials” as the new designation. Members of the working group meet annually at various locations to exchange scientific ideas. We typically conduct basic academic research, primarily growing single crystals—mostly of intermetallic and oxide materials—with unusual physical properties. We strive to achieve sufficient purity and size. Our research explores phenomena such as (unconventional) superconductivity, exotic magnetism, heavy fermion behavior, charge ordering, and quantum criticality. We grow crystals ranging in size from centimeters to a few micrometers using techniques like the floating zone method and high-temperature solution growth.
